Advancing Seed Treatment Biostimulant in EMEA

As climate variability intensifies, protecting crops from the earliest stages of development has become a strategic priority for growers and the agricultural industry alike. In response, at Acadian Plant Health, we have developed a new seed treatment biostimulant designed to prime seedlings against stress at early growth stages. Enrico Boccaletti, Vice President of Global Portfolio and Strategic Partners at Acadian, presented this latest innovation at the NewAg Annual International Conference in Madrid, Spain.

Building on more than four decades of expertise in marine-based biostimulants, we are introducing Stress Control Seed Treatment, a next-generation seed treatment biostimulant.

A Complete Biological System

Stress Control Seed Treatment is an antioxidant and osmo-protectant biostimulant that primes seedlings against water and temperature stress at the most susceptible early growth stages, unlocking a complete biological system derived from Ascophyllum nodosum extracts. Our advanced proprietary extraction process preserves a complex network of four bioactive compounds that work together to communicate with plants and support their natural stress response mechanisms.

Advanced Formulation Designed for Seed Treatment

Developing a biostimulant suitable for modern seed treatment applications requires more than biological performance alone. Through extensive research, our scientists evaluated hundreds of bioactive candidates to identify a synergistic combination of active compounds, optimized as an innovative seed treatment formulation.

The result is a highly advanced formulation developed at Acadian’s Formulation Centre of Excellence in the UK, designed to integrate seamlessly into existing seed treatment operations.

Key formulation attributes include:

  • Uniform seed coverage with well‑dispersed particles

  • Strong adhesion and very low dust‑off (Heubach ESTA standard)

  • Excellent handling through conventional seed treatment equipment

  • Compatible with standard fungicide, insecticide and biological seed treatments

  • Proven storage stability with a three‑year shelf life

These characteristics ensure reliable performance from application through planting.

Proven Mode of Action: Priming Without Overstimulation

Stress Control Seed Treatment works through a priming mechanism, preparing seedlings to respond more efficiently when stress occurs, while not disbalancing the plant when conditions are favorable.

Research shows that treated maize and soybean exhibit impressive gene activation in response to drought stress. It also presents synergism when compared with separate active ingredients. In maize, 119 genes were upregulated (photosynthesis processes, oxidoreductase and UDP-glycosyltransferase activity) and 45 genes were downregulated (hydrolase activity). In soybean, 87 genes were upregulated (stress response and photosynthesis-related processes) and 24 genes were downregulated (phosphorelay signal transduction system).

This primed response helps seedlings maintain growth, recover faster following stress events, and reduce biomass loss compared with untreated crops.

A Unique Acadian Innovation

Stress Control Seed Treatment is a proprietary Acadian innovation for arable crops, combining marine science, advanced formulation expertise, and in-depth knowledge of plant stress physiology. By supporting early plant resilience and activating natural defense pathways only when needed, it helps crops start stronger without imposing unnecessary energy demands.
