Cucurbits
Acadian Plant Health™ seaweed extracts improve yield and quality of cucurbits thanks to enhanced fruit set, improved root growth and nutritional uptake as well as improved tolerance to environmental stresses. Foliar applications of APH™ seaweed extract encourage strong bloom and fruit set. Extending foliar applications past initial fruit set can result in an extended bloom for additional harvests. Applying it to the soil enhances root growth as well as abiotic stress tolerance.
BENEFITS FOR CUCURBITS INCLUDE:
- Strong growth during the establishment period
- Improved abiotic stress resistance
- Improved nutrient levels
- Improved yield
SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN, FIELD-TESTED SOLUTIONS
IMPROVED EARLY PLANT DEVELOPMENT
WATERMELON TRIAL ‘SUGAR BABY’
NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA
Maximizing crop yield and quality begins with a healthy root system. Crops with larger root systems take up nutrients more efficiently, which contributes to better overall plant development.
In a greenhouse trial on watermelons, 7 days after transplanting to cell packs, the young plants treated with APH™ seaweed extract had visibly more roots than the control plants.
Adding APH™ seaweed extract at planting gets the melon’s root system off to a much stronger and faster start and enables it to support the plant’s fruit load throughout the season.
IMPROVED NUTRIENT LEVELS
WATERMELON TRIAL ‘CRIMSON SWEET’
MARYLAND, UNITED STATES
Proper nutrition is key to melon production. Melons treated with APH™ seaweed extract make much better use of nutritional products you apply and convert them into a bountiful crop.
Melons treated with APH™ seaweed extract made better use of available nutrition and had higher levels of nitrates. This was true under both the regular (168 kg/ha, 150 lb/A) and the reduced-fertility (112 kg/ha, 100 lb/A) programs.
IMPROVED ABIOTIC STRESS TOLERANCE
CANTALOUPE TRIAL ‘NITRO’
NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA
Environmental stresses such as heat, salinity and lack of water can have a major impact on yield and quality. Reducing the impact of these stresses can greatly improve root growth. Managing stress also increases yield and quality by reducing culls, deformed fruit and blossom end rot.
These cantaloupe seedlings have been grown in salty conditions. Ten days after APH™ seaweed extract application, the treated seedlings show improved root and leaf development.
IMPROVED YIELD
CANTALOUPE TRIAL ‘GOLD EXPRESS’
ARIZONA, UNITED STATES
Strong early growth, proper nutrition, and amazing stress tolerance all work together to give you excellent packouts of quality fruit. And that pays! Trials conducted at the University of Arizona demonstrated that APH™ seaweed extract treatments improve total yield and size of cantaloupe. Why settle for maintaining melon yields when you can max them out?
In this trial, using APH™ seaweed extract applications resulted in a shift in fruit size distribution towards larger sizes as well as a 9.7% increase in overall yield. Since larger sizes receive a better price, this resulted in an even more impressive 27% increase in grower’s gross revenue.
INCREASED FRUIT NUMBER
CUCURBIT TRIALS
VARIOUS LOCATIONS
APH™ seaweed extract increased the number of cucurbits harvested in 17 of 19 trials. The average cucurbit number increase was 10.4%. Increase in number and size (see trial results above) lead to increased gross return.
