Acadian Seaplants Limited™ Joins The United Nations Global Compact

Dartmouth, NS, Canada – November 2, 2023 – Acadian Seaplants Limited™ is proud to join the United Nations Global Compact (UN Global Compact) initiative – a voluntary leadership platform for the development, implementation, and disclosure of responsible business practices. With more than 18,000 companies and 3,800 non-business signatories based in over 160 countries, the UN Global Compact is the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative.

“At Acadian Seaplants Limited, we know that being a global leader in seaweed harvesting, cultivation, and extraction is a privilege that carries immense responsibilities,” says Jean-Paul Deveau, President and CEO, Acadian Seaplants Limited. “As a member of the UN Global Compact, we will continue to build on more than 40 years of experience to provide plants, animals, and people with unique renewable sources of essential nutrients and organic compounds. We are proud to work collaboratively with environment and business experts to continue to establish a robust and sustainable seaweed industry worldwide.”

Members of the UN Global Compact centre incorporate sustainability through the integration of Ten Principles into strategies, policies, and procedures. Spanning the four key areas of Human Rights, Labour, Environment, and Anti-Corruption, the Ten Principles are designed for members to uphold their responsibilities to people and planet and set the stage for long-term success.

Commitment to a Sustainable Future

According to the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, seaweed is the greatest untapped resource on the planet. It has the potential to address many of the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals and connects the land and the ocean in a circular and regenerative way.

Acadian had already officially joined the Global Seaweed Coalition in May 2023, which is a global partnership established by Lloyd’s Register Foundation in partnership with the UN Global Compact (UNGC) and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) to oversee the safety and sustainability of the seaweed industry as it scales up. As such, becoming a member of the UN Global compact illustrates further stewardship that is essential to Acadian Seaplants Limited’s operations. Operating in the seaweed cultivation and extraction sector, our Resource Management team conducts regular biomass assessments and habitat research to support the preservation of coastal ecosystems, in partnership with local institutions.

As a member of the UN Global Compact, Acadian Seaplants Limited will work together to establish a seaweed industry that provides safe products, safe working conditions, and environmental protection as it grows.

Continuous Improvement of Global Quality Standards

Acadian Seaplants Limited has built its reputation on the integrity of its natural resources. Through careful resource management and rigorous quality assurance checks, Acadian Seaplants Limited acts as a leader in the creation and implementation of sustainable quality assurance standards. Joining the UN Global Compact is a natural next step in upholding the values that both organizations share.
