Acadian Plant Health™ Joins the ‘4 per 1000’ Initiative Amid Growing Calls for Climate-Smart Agriculture
Dartmouth, NS, Canada – February 7, 2024 – Acadian Plant Health™, a global leader in science-based biostimulant technologies that unite crop performance and sustainability, is proud to join the “4 per 1000” Initiative. The global initiative aims to raise the awareness of soil's potential to mitigate climate change through increasing the amount of carbon stored in soil. Its name comes from the theoretical calculation that an increase of 0,4% of carbon in soil every year will help stop the increase of CO2 that is accumulating in our atmosphere from anthropogenic emissions.
“Every year, we hear from more and more partners across the food value chain on their concerns around managing costs, ensuring crop resiliency, and driving down emissions,” says James Maude, Senior Vice President of Portfolio Development, Acadian Plant Health. “Joining the global ‘4 per 1000’ initiative is recognition of the need for public and private collaboration to solve these pressing challenges. Our technology plays a role in increasing carbon in the soil, with trials showing increased root and shoot biomass. This in turn converts to organic soil carbon content – a key driver in carbon storage in soil. We are proud to leverage our global scale and industry-leading biostimulant solutions to work alongside experts across the world to drive forward climate-smart agriculture.”
The partnership comes on the heels of the COP28 Declaration on Food and Agriculture, where 159 countries, including Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom, recognized the "profound potential of agriculture” to address climate change and committed to revisiting and orienting agriculture policy to promote activities that increase incomes, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and bolster resilience.
Supporting Healthy and Carbon-Rich Soils
Soil is one of the Earth’s biggest carbon sinks, with the potential to stop further CO2 accumulation in the atmosphere and therefore contribute to stabilizing our climate. Through the use of Acadian Plant Health’s technology, its solutions contribute to regenerative agriculture by restoring degraded soil, increasing carbon sink, and improving water use efficiency. In addition to the effects on field, for every tonne of seaweed Acadian Plant Health harvests, there is a potential of 362 kg of CO2-eq captured by our regenerative vegetal raw material.

About 4per1000
Launched at COP21 in Paris, the international “4 per 1000 Initiative: Soils for Food Security and Climate” aims to show that agriculture, and in particular agriculture soils, can provide concrete solutions to the challenge of climate change while at the same time meeting the challenge of food security by implementing agricultural agroecological practices adapted to local conditions.
